Reconnect with school online

Proposed Online School

Proposed to Open Semester 1, 2027 | Subject to NSSAB accreditation
Expression of interest only.
Not an application or enrolment and does not guarantee a place.

When attending a physical school feels difficult or impossible, there is another way to stay connected to learning. Y Schools Queensland Online is a proposed, high-support online school combining scheduled live learning, clear routines and personalised wellbeing support.

Designed initially for young people in Years 9 and 10, with the aim of expanding to other year levels, it will help students rebuild confidence, routine and engagement – with pathways towards further education, training, employment or, where appropriate, a return to on-campus learning.

When school stops working, connection matters most

School disengagement can begin quietly: missed days, growing anxiety, withdrawal, or a sense that school is no longer a place where your child belongs. Families can feel they have tried everything, while their young person falls further away from learning.

Y Schools Queensland Online is being created to meet young people at that point – not just a laptop and a login, but real structure, real relationships and active support. The goal is to keep education and future pathways open while helping each student take achievable steps forward.

The right option for the right young person

Online learning will not suit every student. Some young people need – and prefer – the daily face-to-face contact of a campus. The proposed enrolment process would help families understand the model, expectations and support available before deciding whether it may be a good fit.

Could Y Schools Queensland Online suit your young person?

Y Schools Queensland Online is designed for young people who may benefit from a different way of learning – one that provides flexibility, connection, personalised support and a clear pathway forward. It may be worth expressing your interest if your young person:

  • would thrive with the flexibility of learning from home
  • would benefit from a smaller, more personalised and trauma-responsive learning environment
  • needs flexibility around attendance, health, wellbeing or personal circumstances
  • learns best with a clear timetable, regular teacher contact and encouragement
  • would benefit from rebuilding their confidence, connection and engagement with learning
  • is looking for a positive way to reconnect with education and work towards their future goals
  • wants to continue working towards recognised education, training or employment pathways.

Every young person is different. By submitting an Expression of Interest, we can share updates with you. If accreditation is granted, we’ll be able to discuss whether Y Schools Queensland Online would be a good fit for your young person, and offer details about the eligibility and enrolment process.

Not homeschooling. Not learning alone.

This is not a parent-led homeschooling program or a collection of tasks for students to complete by themselves. Subject to accreditation, Y Schools Queensland Online would be a registered-school model with qualified teachers, scheduled learning, curriculum and assessment, and integrated wellbeing support.

Parents and carers would not be expected to teach the curriculum. Families would help establish a suitable learning space and routine, while Y Schools Queensland employees would lead teaching, monitor participation and provide support when a student begins to disengage.

Grounded Care, Positive Futures
Year 9 – 10 (proposed)

We are currently seeking approval from the Non-State Schools Accreditation Board (NSSAB) to establish a new online school.

This school is proposed only, and will open only if accreditation is granted.

If approved, the campus is intended to initially cater for students in Years 9 and 10, with plans to expand to additional year levels in the future.

About Y Schools Queensland

Y Schools Queensland operates multiple campuses across South-East Queensland, providing tailored education options for young people who may benefit from a more personalised and supportive learning environment.

Across our existing campuses, students are supported through adjusted educational programs alongside integrated wellbeing support, with a focus on re-engagement, belonging, and positive pathways beyond school.

Online learning should still feel like school
– and still feel human

The proposed model brings education and wellbeing support together in one connected program.

  • 01 Live, structured learning

Scheduled live online classes and small-group sessions, supported by clear routines and engagement expectations.

  • 02 Personalised progress

Individual learning and wellbeing plans that respond to each student’s strengths, needs and goals.

  • 03 Supported independent work

Students will sometimes work independently on assignments, assessments and study. They’ll do the work themselves, but won’t be on their own—their teacher and support staff will remain available online to provide guidance, answer questions and help them stay on track.

  • 04 Daily connection

Regular wellbeing check-ins and contact with teachers and youth workers – not a student left alone with a screen.

  • 05 Proactive outreach

If engagement begins to decline, the team reaches out early to understand what is happening and help the student reconnect.

  • 06 Future pathways

Planning towards QCE and other recognised outcomes, vocational education and training, further study, employment, or a return to campus where appropriate.

When students check out, we check in.

What We Aim To Offer (if Accredited)

If accreditation is granted, the proposed online school would reflect the established Y Schools Queensland model.

More than lessons on a screen

Y Schools Queensland Online is designed for young people who need a higher level of relational support. Qualified education staff would work alongside wellbeing professionals to build trust, strengthen routine and help students participate at a pace that is challenging but achievable.

  • Qualified teachers and small-group learning

  • Online youth-worker and counselling support

  • Regular wellbeing check-ins

  • Individual learning and wellbeing planning

  • A trauma-responsive, wellbeing-first approach

  • Connection to the wider Y Schools Queensland network

Support should be timely and personal.

    What progress could look like

Progress will not look the same for every student. For some, it begins with logging in regularly or responding to a teacher. Over time, it may include:

    • Rebuilding a daily or weekly routine

    • Attempting and submitting learning tasks with support

    • Asking for help instead of withdrawing

    • Growing confidence in literacy, numeracy and core subjects

    • Participating in small peer interactions

    • Working towards learning and pathway goals

    • Considering a return to campus, further study or employment

The focus is steady, visible progress – not perfection.

      Frequently Asked Questions

      Answers for families

      • Is Y Schools Queensland Online open now?

No. It is a proposed school and is subject to NSSAB accreditation. If achieved, the first Years 9 – 10 cohort is intended to begin in Semester 1, 2027.

      • Can I enrol my child now?

Not yet. You can express your interest to receive updates by email. Enrolment information will be provided if the school achieves accreditation.

      • Does expressing interest guarantee a place?

No. An expression of interest is not an application or enrolment and does not guarantee a place.

      • How will enrolment work, if accredited?

Families who have registered their interest will be notified when enrolments open. All enrolments require a professional referral. An appropriate referrer could be someone from your current or previous school, a health or family service.

      • Who is the proposed online school for?

It is designed initially for young people in Years 9 and 10 who are struggling to attend or stay engaged in a physical school and would benefit from structured learning with a high level of wellbeing support.

      • Is Y Schools Queensland Online inclusive?

Y Schools Queensland values diversity and aims to provide inclusive learning environments where young people are supported and respected. Mental health complications, disability or a medical diagnosis do not automatically establishe eligibility; suitability will be considered on an individual basis. Inclusion is maintained through consultation with students and families or carers with reasonable adjustments, accessible learning materials and individual participation arrangements accommodated where possible.

      • Will online school suit every young person?

No. Some students learn and connect best on campus, while others may benefit from a supported online environment. Suitability depends on the young person's needs, preferences, circumstances and ability to participate in the proposed routine. Families will receive clear information before making an enrolment decision.

      • Is this the same as homeschooling?

No. The proposed model is a registered-school model, subject to approval, with qualified teachers, scheduled learning, curriculum and assessment, and integrated wellbeing support. Parents and carers would support routines at home, but would not be expected to become the teacher.

      • How is this different from learning at home during COVID-19?

COVID-era remote learning was an emergency response by campus-based schools. Y Schools Queensland Online is being designed specifically for online delivery, with scheduled live learning, small-group interaction, individual planning, wellbeing support and proactive follow-up built into the model.

      • Will students learn live with teachers?

Yes. Students will join live, interactive classes with their teachers as part of their regular school day. Learning will include teacher instruction, discussions, collaboration, questions, feedback and opportunities to connect with classmates. Our goal is to create a thriving, social and caring online community where young people feel known, connected and part of something. Students won’t simply be completing work online—they’ll be learning with their teachers and peers, building relationships and being part of our school community.

      • What if my child finds it hard to log in or stay motivated?

The model is specifically designed to support ongoing engagement. Regular check-ins, individual planning and proactive outreach would help identify barriers early and support students to reconnect.

      • Will my child have contact with other students?

Yes. Small-group learning and supported peer interaction are intended parts of the model because connection and belonging matter.

      • Will my child spend the whole day on a screen?

Students will spend much of their school day learning online, but they won’t be expected to sit in front of a screen continuously. Just like at face-to-face school, they’ll have a morning tea break and lunch break, as well as short opportunities to step away from the screen throughout the day—for example, for a brain break, movement break or quick bathroom break.  We encourage students to use these breaks to move their bodies, get outside, change their environment and give their eyes a rest from the screen. There will also be times when students work independently while staying connected to their online classroom, with their teacher nearby to provide guidance, encouragement and support.

      • Will my child have to keep their camera on?

Yes. Students are expected to have their camera on during online classes. This helps teachers and youth workers build relationships, support participation and engagement, and maintain appropriate safeguarding and supervision. We understand that there may be circumstances where having a camera on creates a barrier to participation. Where a student requires a reasonable adjustment, this will be discussed with the student and their parent/carer and documented as part of their individual support arrangements.

      • How much support will parents or carers need to provide?

Families would help create a suitable learning space and support agreed routines, but teaching, assessment and wellbeing support would be provided by Y Schools Queensland staff.

      • What happens if my child misses class or stops participating?

The proposed model includes attendance monitoring, regular check-ins and proactive outreach. If engagement drops, staff would contact the student and family to understand the barrier and agree on practical next steps.

      • What equipment is needed?

Students and their families or carers may choose to bring their own device (BYOD), however Y Schools Queensland will provide the necessary devices and equipment needed by any student.

      • What will it cost?

The current proposal includes an optional annual family contribution of $675, inclusive of resources and equipment.

      • Can students work towards QCE, training or employment pathways?

Yes. The proposed model is intended to support students in preparing for, or commencing, eligible senior pathways. The model will keep recognised education and future pathways open, including the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), vocational education and training, further study and employment.

      • How will student safety be supported online?

Y Schools Queensland's safeguarding approach would apply to the proposed online school, alongside clear expectations for online behaviour, privacy and staff contact. Detailed online-safety and escalation procedures should be published before enrolment opens.

      • Does every student have to return to a physical campus?

No single pathway will suit every student. Where appropriate, the team may help a young person build readiness to return to campus. Others may progress towards different education, training or employment pathways.

      • Will more year levels be offered later?

The current proposal is to begin with Years 9 and 10, then expand over time, subject to accreditation, demand and operational readiness.
